Closer and Closer

Hey everybody! Josh Kuhl here, just dropping in an update about my new record and how it’s coming along. I ran through a rehearsal of the batch of songs I’ve written for the record last night, and I feel really excited about this. The good thing about running through these songs with just my acoustic is the fact that when I do go to record, it allows the songs to kind of take on tones on their own. Sometimes it simply stays just solo acoustic, as seen in Cleansing Tides, but in other instances it becomes experimental and different. I have a feeling this record will be a mixture of the two, but I can’t guarantee that nor pressure myself into making such a release. It has to come out organically, and I’m excited for that.

So, please bear with me here as try to let this collection of songs grow and incubate a bit before I reveal them to you. My plans are that I’ll start recording within the month. I can say that there are some nice airy songs for you to listen and chill out to, and some others that build up and explode, and others, well, I can’t really explain them yet. So keep on keeping on, or something, and in the meantime listen to my last record! Thank you for the tremendous support. You’re all amazing.

-Josh.

Updates Updates Updates

Hey everybody! So I’m extremely sorry for my lack of posting these past few months, life got busy and I haven’t had much time to think or really do much of anything other than work and spend time with my girlfriend and family (normal adult stuff). I’ve been working and writing songs for my solo follow up to ”Cleansing Tides” and have been really excited for the songs that are coming out and developing. I’m drawing from influences from all over the place on this record, but honestly it will still be deeply entrenched in the folk ethos of my previous work, but with a foot placed strong in the experimental realm. I’m experimenting with harmonies, ambient noises, beeps and bops, and all sorts of things, while also delivering some homespun lyrics and melodies to keep you kids groovin’ and bopping your heads for hours on end. If, of course, you bop your head to midtempo and occasionally uptempo folk songs with no real percussion. This record is definitely a concept record, however, and I’m watching it evolve and grow with a very keen eye. There are a few songs that’ll form the foundation and the centerpiece of this concept and overall album, and the songs in between these particular tunes will build up the record brick by twangy brick.

So in conclusion, I ask that you bear with me as I feel out this record and piece it together. I don’t want to rush this, because this is a record that is very surreal and serious to me. I’ve been wanting to make a concept record since I started writing songs years ago, and this now seems like the perfect time to finally do it. I feel I’ve matured enough to pull this off, and I really really hope you enjoy it. I’m going to take my time with this one, because I feel like this record is one that needs a lot of planning and crafting on my part. Thank you for your patience, I really appreciate it. If you have the time, please download “Cleansing Tides” here. I know it’s my last record and will be a bit different in comparison to its follow up, but it is the foundation for this record, and it is free for you to download. Every download means the world to me because it’s another fan that likes my music, and that’s a huge boost for me. Thank you.

Happy Valentines Day Everyone!

I don’t have any valentines to give you (my girlfriend surely wouldn’t like that), but what I do have is this record of mine that you can download for free. I know I have been inundating your dashboards with my posts every few days or so, but it’s simply because this record is something that means a lot to me, and I want to share it with you.

I started writing Cleansing Tides in the winter/spring of 2011, and began truly recording it in May I believe. I finished the record this past summer, and released it in October this past year. The songs on this record deal with all sorts of things, love, faith, coming home, etc. They all are very personal to me, and as I write my next record these songs still stay in my mind because they were my new beginning as a songwriter in a lot of ways. This was the first full record I had made since my old band, the Winning Stretch, broke up, and I was starting things again from scratch. I came out with a solo EP last winter with my good friend Zac McCormick playing on it with me, but I feel that Cleansing Tides was my first solo release in a lot of ways. It was a solo acoustic record with just my vocals and harmonies, as well as my girlfriends backup vocals, and I mixed and recorded it all. It was like starting back over back when I was way younger in the days of the Winning Stretch, except this time I was starting over knowing a whole lot more, and having a much sharper focus and development as a songwriter.

I loved making this record. There’s a couple of songs on there about my girlfriend that you can share with your significant other for Valentines Day, but also a bunch of other tracks if you don’t have one! So please take a listen by clicking here, and if you like it please download it for free. I appreciate all your support. Happy Valentines Day!
